I'm sure the XWidget for Windows desktop widget display used to have a right-click menu which included such items as 'Update weather'. I now find I can't activate this - not sure when this started happening, but I'm running XWidget Ver.1.9.7.808 on Windows 7 x64 (fully updated). Is it just me?

Hello NorthPole. XWidget by default has the right click options enable.
There is this option though (right click on the XW's icon tray):

Remember that the widget's right click menu depends on the design (because is the designer that puts it or not)
But for the main right click options of the XWidget check the above screenshot.
If you still have problems, re-install the program.

jimking, many thanks, that fixed it! I had cleared the 'Disable All Widgets PopupMenu' option, thinking it referred to a dialogue box showing various widgets available for selection, which was coming up occasionally on system startup. Is there a correct way of stopping that happening, by any chance?

That tab that occasionally appears sometimes during Xwidget loading process, is when the program detects a crash and gives you the possibility to remove a widget from your desktop from there. If all load ok the tab as you noticed goes away by its own.
I have noticed that this happens when there are many widgets on screen, and the program tries to load all of them plus the other programs that the pc loads on start-up. Try to open the task manager to check the cpu usage. Cleaning periodically the register, disable unwanted programs from the start up list always help to run all more smoothly and without crashes. XWidget uses minimum resources but when you put many widgets on screen especially the animated ones the cpu increases..
At the end, there some widgets created (by other users) that are not created "properly" and have abnormal cpu and ram usage. These can crash the program for example.
The task manager can help you discover the cpu and ram usage of XWidget process
